“Rissho" means establishing the teachings of the true Dharma (Lotus Sutra) in the world.

“Ko” signifies the mutual exchange of thought among people seeking spiritual growth – the principle of spiritual unity among all human beings.

“Sei” stands for perfection of the personality and the attainment of Buddhahood.

“Kai” means association or society.

March 5, 1938 — Nikkyo Niwano and Myoko Naganuma established Rissho Kosei-kai in Japan, with a modest group of approximately thirty members. This moment marked the beginning of a profound spiritual movement that would grow to touch countless lives around the world.

September 10, 1957 — Myoko Naganuma, the beloved cofounder, passed away at the age of sixty-seven.

January 1958 — Nikkyo Niwano reaffirmed that the focus of devotion of Rissho Kosei-kai is the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni, the Great Benevolent Teacher and World-Honored One.

 

March 1959 — The first overseas chapter of Rissho Kosei-kai was established in Hawaii, marking the beginning of the organization’s international expansion.

 

May 1964 — The Great Sacred Hall in Tokyo was completed, embodying the spiritual aspirations of Rissho Kosei-kai’s growing community.

 

1984 — The Founding members of Rissho Kosei-kai San Antonio begin meeting in members' homes.  

 

November 15, 1991 — Rev. Nichiko Niwano was inaugurated as the second president of Rissho Kosei-kai. This ceremonial Inheriting of the Lamp of the Dharma ensured the continuity of RK’s mission and vision.​

 

1996 — The leadership of Rissho Kosei-kai in San Antonio was strengthened with the appointment of Reverend Naomi Nakamura as the minister, guiding its members with wisdom and compassion.

 

October 4, 1999 — Nikkyo Niwano, the founder of Rissho Kosei-kai, passed away at the age of ninety-two. His departure marked the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another, as his teachings and leadership continued to inspire.

2008 — Rev. Nakamura retires.

 

October 28, 2018 — Rissho Kosei-kai San Antonio celebrated our Gohonzon Enshrinement ceremony.

 

December 5, 2024 — The San Antonio branch was recognized as an independent Dharma Center within the worldwide network of Rissho Kosei-kai. With this transition, Reverend Kevin Roche became the inaugural Minister of the center.
